Project Objective

As part of Germany’s Telematics Infrastructure (TI), hospitals are required to provide relevant medical documents for the Electronic Patient Record (ePA).

Older laboratory reports were often stored as the system-specific document type N_LABOR2. Since these documents are not directly compatible with the ePA, they must be converted into PDF documents using SAP standard functionality.

The SAP report RN2KUMPDF was used for this purpose.

Day 1 – Research and System Analysis

The project started with an analysis of the SAP documentation and SAP Notes.

Special attention was paid to the BC Set

ISH_N2_INSTPMD_N1KUM_PDF

which provides the required customizing for PDF generation of cumulative laboratory reports.

The following components were verified:

  • BC Set installation
  • PMD Workbench configuration
  • Document mapping
  • SAP report RN2KUMPDF
  • TI prerequisites

Day 2 – BC Set Installation

The BC Set was activated in the development system.

After successful testing, the configuration was transported through the PMD Workbench from

Development → Quality Assurance → Production

Each transport was verified before continuing.

Day 3 – Creating the Patient Selection

To process large numbers of patients, a mass selection was developed.

Selection criteria included:

  • Last two months
  • Organizational unit
  • Institution
  • Case status
  • Discharge date

The configuration was saved as a reusable selection variant.

Day 4 – Functional Testing

Initial tests were performed using individual patients.

During testing it became apparent that only one laboratory report was converted into a PDF document.

Additional reports were ignored.

Day 5 – Debugging

The issue was analyzed using the ABAP Debugger.

Variables, internal tables, loops and function modules were examined step by step.

The root cause was identified as a customer-specific User Exit interfering with the SAP standard processing.

After temporarily disabling the User Exit, the SAP report successfully converted all laboratory reports.

Day 6 – PDF Transformation

The conversion process is executed using transaction SE38.

The report RNASEL00 starts the SAP report RN2KUMPDF, which converts historical laboratory documents (document type N_LABOR2) into ePA-compatible PDF files.

Additional validation included:

  • Correct document mapping
  • Successful PDF creation
  • Availability for ePA transfer
  • Verification of all selected documents

Day 7 – Automation

After successful testing, a background job was configured.

The scheduled job

  • executes the predefined selection variant,
  • processes all relevant patients,
  • generates PDF documents,
  • and prepares them for transfer to the electronic patient record.

The background job is scheduled to run once every month, ensuring that newly available historical laboratory reports are automatically converted.

Project Outcome

The project successfully automated the transformation of historical laboratory reports into ePA-compatible PDF documents.

By combining SAP standard functionality, BC Set configuration, PMD Workbench transports, ABAP debugging and scheduled background processing, historical medical documents can now be provided efficiently for Germany’s Electronic Patient Record (ePA).
